University Of Chicago DCAM Building MRI

This 3T MRI is in DCAM at the University of Chicago Medical Center. This MRI required both RF Shielding and magnetic shielding, continuous throughout. While RF shields are usually nonferrous, magnetic shields are ferrous, usually mild steel laminated outside of the rf shield to protect people or electronics from the 5 Gauss field. The cryogen is kept cold using a Filtrene glycol dedicated chiller in the equipment room directly underneath the MRI room. During Construction a large HEPA fan creates negative pressure inside the room to avoid anything from escaping into the active hospital. A pressure detector logs this pressure continuously. Fortunately in this location no crane was required because it was a ground-level site. Union riggers use a forklift and skates to deliver to the site.

University Of Chicago Q Building MRI

Delivering an MRI through a 3rd-floor window that is surrounded by other buildings. No problem for IQ Contracting. With a coordinated evacuation plan and a two crane team, almost 50 people participated in this lift. The 300-ton crane requires 12-53′ trucks of counterweights and extensions built onto a smaller crane by another small crane. First, the old MRI is removed using a platform that is temporarily attached to the building. As we began delivering the new MRI, the helicopter team alerted us to an emergency case. All activity was backed up as we waited for the patient to arrive. Deliveries typically take a few hours out and in, this was two long days.

John H Stronger Jr. Hospital Of Cook County

When the Fantus Clinic closed, it’s radiology equipment was relocated into the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. IQ Contracting has completed turnkey projects over the years in multiple Cook County Health departments including Cardiac and Interventional Catheterization Labs, Radiology, MRI, Pathology Lab, Nuclear Medicine, and Urology. In cooperation with Canon Medical Systems, 2 CT scanners and an MRI were relocated into expanded departments. Because of the construction of the Cook County Health Professional Building, we craned the new MRI in between buildings. Various Interim Life Safety measures are required to collaborate with adjacent spaces. IQ Contracting uses the all hands on deck approach, as things can get very busy.

University Of Illinois Chicago Hybrid Operating Suite

With so many advancements in medicine, large hospitals are adding Radiology Imaging into the permanent structure an operating suite. This suite was extended from the end of the operating department and required a dedicated operating suite level air handling unit. In order to avoid wasting any space, it was built into the space above the control room. All new medical gases were connected into the old system including a SmartTap process to avoid a shutdown of the whole system. Union pipe-fitters complete a special training to use the equipment. Structural Steel is welded and uni strut connected as required. New equipment booms and surgical light were strategically attached in exact places to avoid collision. The walls were sealed with a Corian product from floor to ceiling, a rubber floor and a laminar flow ceiling to ensure a sterile field for the patient. Lead windows, doors and drywall are used to protect staff from exposure to radiation during the procedure. A light above the door informs people outside the room that the X-Ray tube is on during imaging. Hybrid Operating Rooms are currently the highest dollar per sq ft construction projects in any hospital.
